Artist's Description

These two stumps are all that remains of these trees near the shoreline. To many of us they are just stumps but to me they have an interesting story to tell. I imagine that at one point in time they were healthy trees that played an important role in the coastal ecosystem. But when? It could have been months ago, years ago or even decades ago.

It is likely that one of the storms coming through the area, possibly a hurricane, is what claimed their lives and changed the coastal landscape forever as these storms often do. Something tells me these two didn't go down without a fight though. There are no other stumps like this anywhere around them. At least none that I could find. Were they always the only two trees or were all the others unable to hold their ground and got swept out to sea or buried in the sand? No one knows for sure but it is fun to imagine. Even now, I feel they are still reaching towards the sun or maybe calling to the sea.

Coastal life here on Florid...

About Mike Whalen

Mike Whalen

I am a nerd and an artist living in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. I grew up in beautiful New England but traded the white snow for the white sands about 10 years ago. I have always had a passion for photographic art and got my first professional camera just over 4 years ago. I enjoy shooting just about anything but my passion is around landscape photography and artistic compositions. Anything that gets me outside to experience and capture this wonderful earth or provides an opportunity to display an object or scene in a different view.
